Dear Gail,
Your family history sounds very interesting, however,is quite different from ours! Our history did not begin at the time of, or as a result of,a shore port of entry which resulted in the introduction of slavery in the 1600's. We, as Indian people, havae occupied our original landbase for thousands of years. We have a very long and rich history. Part of that history does include the Dutch occupation of our area, and I'm sure you can guess how that ended up! Also individuals have married "colored", but it does not account for the entire tribe anymore then, as it would now. I am not familiar with the people of which you have spoken of,except for the Lumbee. To my knowledge, they are, and always have been Indian people, with a "relationship" with the BIA. I know they are many in number, and a great example of self sufficiency for all indian people.
The names of the groups you spoke of, do not indicate any tribal affiliation. Where do the names come from? Are they names imposed upon you by others, or are they what yiu call yourselves? and why? I'ld be interested to know. To what tribe or nation do you decend?
If you would like to learn more about my people, our site is now up and running @ www.ramapoughlenapenation.org
