Re: Ramapough Mountain Indians
In Response To: Re: Ramapough Mountain Indians ()
I am of American Indian descent Kentucky Cherokee (Greenup, KY. I have lived in NJ for 8 yrs. I recently heard this term "Jackson-Whites". It was an investor for our business that mentioned his wife was a "Jackson-White". It had no relevance nor did we understand what this meant. So here I am researching and reading this thread. I have to say this dialogue has been more infomative than the encyclopedia. However, I am disturbed by the misconception that is consistently passed on as well as believed. I don't know anything other than my recent research on this subject but I do know this...
Don't we all bleed red!! Isn't this black history month and aren't African American's still fighting the sterotypes that are placed on them? What does it matter where they live, what school they attend and whether they are a social type of people or not? They are still people and deserve the respect of being a human spirit. Let's say they do look "different". Who doesn't?? (unless you are of identical birth!) My husband is an African American of twin birth. He still deserves his own identity. As do these people. I am very passionate about letting people be who they are. I fought all my life to keep hold of my identity. No matter how they came about they have HISTORY and HISTORY is who we were, who we are, and who we will become. Celebrate them by ASKING questions respectfully, LISTENING earnestly, and SPEAK truthfully, but most of all RESPECT their feelings.
I read this link that beautifully displayed a friendship with a child of the Ramapough Mountain Indians. It also shows the effect that these stories can have on a child by the actions of an adult.
...And To the Lady wondering if her child should attend the school.. I am a mother of two and I would love for my children to have a friendship like the one mentioned on this link:
Refering to the "Introduction" It's a childhood story
