Re: the comment about the wolf and the dogs, that isn't quite right, according to the Biology that I had learned. You get 1/2 of your chromosomes from your mother and 1/2 from your father; it's impossible for a mutt to be more of one parent than another. Maybe the person at the zoo or wherever was overgeneralizing. If one of the parents in question is actually mixed already, then yes, the offspring or "mutt" will have more of the prevalent traits.

For instance, a mutt might look more like the wolf, but that would be because both the chromosomes of the dog and the wolf might favor what's deemed the wolf appearance. But the mutt could have shorter hair than a wolf or even a different hair texture than the wolf because the genetic material is coming from 2 sources; even the internal organs or health conditions could come out more like the dog in some respects, without it being obvious on the surface. But it's impossible for an offspring to be more of one "race" or more of one parent than another; it's always a 50/50 contribution.

I watched a special on domesticated dogs, and they actually are related to the wolf anyway; I believe that the white wolf is their most recent ancestor before domestication. So dogs have so much genetically in common with wolves already.

Getting back on track with many comments and the nature of the post, it's the Autosomal test that directly compares your DNA with peoples in other regions today and the more accurate one in terms of ethnicity according to region. It could be that you are matched to peoples who have been in those regions for a while or migrated to those areas only recently. It's the other tests that look at the Y-chromosome or the mitochondria to determine the migration of ancestors over time; this is the test that is missing all the information from the ancestors in the middle of your family tree, so there's more error with getting the complete picture of ethnic make-up.

I like DNA testing because it's in your face that you can have genetic traits in common with a variety of ethnicities, therefore emphasizing that we have more in common with other humans than we care to realize. Phenotype shouldn't determine who we are or what we should believe in. People are free to pick the cultures and traditions that resonate with them, not just because it's proven they have DNA in common with certain people. (Gosh, if this was true, then many Black American need to start doing Irish jigs and many White Americans need to learn Senagalese Dancing!) So if Black-American culture is what the author is akin to, more power to him and his ancestors for following what felt/feels right viscerally.
