A former co-worker asked if it would be possible by dna to determine if her paternal lineage is German or Swiss (I think it was Swiss; if not Swiss then from some other country bordering Germany.)

I had to break the bad news to her that no, they really could not. I know they break down "European" a little more now than before, but they can't make those close distinctions yet. They (Germans, Swiss, English, etc.) may speak different languages, have different cultures, but at the level of dna, certainly y- or mt-dna, they are basically the same people.
