Re: Anatole Broyard by Henry Louis Gates
In Response To: Re: Anatole Broyard by Henry Louis Gates (Ginger Underwood)
Many of my ancestors could have walked away and became white. Most did not. Many of them could have taken the position that they were better, because they were lighter, but chose instead to embrace their heritage. When people “pass for white” they are saying, it is not enough to be African American. They are saying the material gains of being white are more valuable than family and friends. Broyard was a greedy man. He wanted it all, and in the end, he lost the one thing money cannot buy, family! Life may not have been easy for Anatole in the early days, but eventually he would have achieved the same things he had as a white man, except if he had lived as an n African American, he would have had his family! Furthermore, his children would not be wandering around in the wilderness struggling with their identity!
