Blacks in Europe WW ll
One of my interests is in people of African descent and their survival during the Nazi regime. I knew two men who survived those awful years: Elmer Spyglass from Yellow Springs, Ohio and James Arthur Briggs from Charleston and the Grenadines. They both decided to live in Europe as free black men rather than suffer the constant indignities in America. The racism and hatred that they fled from was also alive and well in Germany and Occupied France.
The "Rhineland Bastards" offspring of German and Africans, families from African colonies living in France, black ex-patriates living in Germany and occupied countries, Hans Massaquoi's German boyhood, the torture and cruel death of African-American soldiers at the hands of German soldiers, are some of the well documented chronicles of men and women of color who suffered during those awful years. And I want to know them all.
I've included a webpage which is a bibliography with links to articles and books. Please browse and click on the titles. Our ancestors suffered under slavery and oppression throughout the centuries in America. However we need to teach our children that people of the African Diaspora in another part of the world, in the century of our parents, suffered under the loathsome Nazi regime.
Also included is are a series of photos entitled:
