Re: searching ancestry from Sri Lanka
In Response To: Re: searching ancestry from Sri Lanka ()
The first thing I did was ask my husband and he has no clue how they trace their ancestry. I know based on information I gathered when I lived in Sri Lanka, that the Tamils use their father's name as a first initial and their own name is what we call the last name, therefore you would have to know what the initial stands for. Women now take on their husband's name as their last name, but historically speaking they used to keep their father's name.
All my husbands brother had the first intial of P., but as they moved to Europe, US or Australia, some of them have turned their name around to match western naming convention. My husband adopted a western first name, but kept is own name Rajasingam as our last name.
