Re: Name Origins

You may wish to search the Internet for discussions of the Blue Vein Societies. I found the following:

Black Life in the Era of Segregation: Accommodation and Resistance
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mcountry/ac399011017.htm

THE WIFE OF HIS YOUTH by Charles W. Chesnutt
http://eserver.org/fiction/chesnutt/wife-of-his-youth.txt
(Author Charles Chesnutt (himself a very light-skinned African American) discusses these groups in one of his novels)

Africana.com
Skin Games: Color and Skin Tone in the Black Community
http://www.africana.com/articles/daily/index_20010108.asp

Other sites discuss the existence of the Blue Vein Societies as told through books, plays etc. I found, however, no actual historical accounts of location, membership or other hard facts. I suspect scholarly work on the subject exists and would be glad to explore this further and report back.
