CRIPPEN, black Shinnecock, Suffolk cty NY
Hi, Have started back looking into my husband's family. His natural father was named Willow MANUEL. Willow had a sister named Edith and a brother Stanly. My husband's half-sisters have been able to give us skimpy information about their father and aunt Edith MANUEL whose father, John MANUEL was from New Delhi India (aka John Kalaya) and his wife was named Helen REDDY (mulatto - Irish/Black from PA). My husbands's aunt - Edith MANUEL, was born Aug 9 1925 in NY died July 1988. According to my husband's half-sisters, Edith married a Shinnecock Indian. and had a daughter named Sheila. They later divorced or separated, and daughter Sheila's whereabouts are unknown.
I have located this family in 1930 census: Emmit A Crippen 45 1884 New York Head Indian Southampton, Suffolk, NY
Details on the 1930 census: Emmit's father is listed as "mixed blood" , mother - Shinnecock Indian. In 1910 I find him and his wife, listed as black: CRIPPEN, EMMETT (1910 U.S. Census)
The only Crippen family that fits is the one above. Shinnecock Indians are of mixed racial heritage - and some have been listed as black or mulatto in early records. They seem to have sons about the correct age for one to have later married Edith. Would like any information from someone who knows this family, or anyone researching the Shinnicock reservation on Long Island. Thanks, Denise
