Interest is certainly high with regard to Black towns established in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Allensworth was founded in 1908 in Tulare County, Calfornia. Named after Civil War Colonel Allen Allensworth, it was the only town in California founded and financed by Blacks. The town's namesake was born a slave and was a Civil War officer and chaplain. For those in the Southern California area -on display at the California African American Museum is the exhibit, "Allensworth: 100 Years of the California Dream" through October 5.
