BRADLEY, Thomas 1917-1998
Bradley, Thomas. The first black mayor of a major US city. While serving as a Los Angeles police officer, Bradley attended night school at Southwestern University. He earned a law degree in 1956 and rose to the rank of police lieutenant. He was elected mayor of Los Angeles in 1973 and served for twenty years. During that time, Los Angeles became the second largest city in the United States and a major business center.
