Bleeding Kansas The term for the small-scale civil war between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces in the late 1850s.

The conflict began after passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act which allowed settlers to decide if the territory would be slave or free.

Both northerners and southerners subsidized the settlement of the area leading for the first time in the pre-Civil War period to the two groups occupying the same ground.
