In regards to the Black Portuguese most of them came from Cape Verde rather than the Azores. Most married local Hawaiians and many became very successful in their endeavors in tghe islands. I suggest you read my They Followed the Trade Winds(2005) and And they Came (2001). The former has a chapter by Edgar Knowlton, retired professor of Portuguese who has written quite a bit about the Cabo Verdeans in Hawaii.
