African American Blacks Help Settle Autralia
In Response To: Re: African American Blacks Help Settle Autralia ()
Aloha Brother Spivey, The author does mention that there were a few intermarriages among the aborigines in Australia, but understandably the indigenous people were confused by the African Americans because they spoke the same language ate the same food and dressed the same way as the white prisoners/settlers. My impression is that there was not an immediate cordial relationship between the two people. However, for sure with succeeding generations. There were English women prisoners/settlers sent along with the men and there were marriages between the African Americans. Also,a few of the African American men had wives in London that evidently went with their spouses or joined them later. Another point, the number of African Americans was very small in comparison to the number of Whites. I guess the whole point of all of this was the British were interested in settling this new territory and needed as many people as they could persuade or force to make the very long trip to Australia from London. Also, it was not just making the trip, but building the country with manual labor. I believe we are off the point for the purpose of this site. I will end this and my apologies. Miles
