Documentary Film on Blacks in Hawaii
In Response To: Documentary Film on Blacks in Hawaii ()
Dear Forum members, I am the Executive Producer of a documentary film on African Americans in Hawaii. Below is a fact sheet on the project: We've Come This Far By Faith Genre: Documentary Length: One Hour(approximately 56:46) Synopsis: African Americans have been part of Hawaii's multiracial society for more than 200 years. Yet their role, their contributions and their story remains largely unknown. "We've Come This Far By Faith" explores that story, the challenges of building a community and the irony of the struggle with racial stereotypes and discrimination in a land heralded as a paradise of diverity and acceptance. As author and psychiatrist, M Scott Peck wrote, community is the "process of building a shared story, built upon respect for all individuals and inclusivity of differences." The film examines how African Americans in Hawaii have undertaken that process of community building toward individual and collective fulfillment. Based on the work of Dr. Miles M. Jackson, particularly "They Followed the Trade Winds" (2004, University of Hawaii Press) Personnel Dr. Miles M. Jackson, (executive producer) and Steve Okino
Schedule Production to begin in Spring 2007, completion expected in early 2008 Contact: Miles M. Jackson (808) 2398943- jackson@hawaii.edu
