I am particularly interested in sharing information on Afro-Mexican pioneers in the West. African-descended peoples migrated north from Mexico as early as the 16th century such as Estevanico, the settlers of Los Angeles who came from Rosario, Sinaloa in 1781 and the Pico Family in the early 19th century. They migrated into other regions or states in the West as well. Also of interest to me are African Americans who migrated South to Mexico to escape slavery, later during Reconstruction and in later years. The Western frontier, certainly for those individuals, extended beyond the United States.
