Re: Black Sailor Stories and the Pacific

Dear Allen,

In my Inreosuction I mention "Blacks in the Pacific Islands", referring to Black sailors who settled in the South Pacific.
"Hazel McPherson, a professor at Geeorge Mason Universiity, interviewed descendants of of these early African Americans settlers in the South Sea Islands... Hailing from New Bedford, Massachusetts ,John Brown, for example, arrived in the Lau Group of Islands on the "Phantom" around 1860 and became a successful trader on the coast of Vatulele... H.B. Williams left his ship in Samoa to open A a "Grog Shop" in Apia. In 1865 Williams moved to Suva {Fiji} and remained there until in died in 1909."
Families in Fiji whose ancestors are proud to identify with their African American ancestry include those of Williams, Brown, Burrows, Dunn, Andrews, Radigan, Rogers, and Butts. Other persons of African / African American, or West Indian ancestry can be found in Cook Islands, Tonga, Kiribati, Papua New
Guinea and throughout Micronesia. Many setteles there after WWII.
