Slave migration to the West
Does anyone have a link to information about the experiences of enslaved people transported to the American frontier by their owners? Specifically, how would an extended family of 4 adult white men and their wives and children manage to migrate from North Carolina to Missouri, taking about 30 of their slaves, plus their livestock and twenty wagons, with them? What would prevent most of the enslaved people from simply taking off during the journey? A book I'm currently reading says, with no citation, that slaves in that situation would have been shackled together for the entire journey. Sounds both horrifying and impossible. Can anyone help me here?
