Hi Anita,

I intended to reply earlier.

Amazing Grace was written by John Newton. He was a former English sea captain of a slave ship. He had a religious conversion during a heavy storm while on a slave voyage. Newton, later, became a minister and wrote several spritiuals including Amazing Grace. Below is a link to one of my favorites. It is Wintley Phipps who points out most negro spirituals can be played by playing only the black keys of the piano.
