Yes, they make "good" stories and songs, but they tell us nothing about the real and accurate history of the very real people who were part of the Underground Railroad. I would llike it if someone could come up with one actual person who used either the quilt code or the Follow the Drinking Gourd song as a vehicle to freedom. Dr. Boswell, as far as I knew, never used to claim her direct ancestors ever used the quilt code, so I am confused about this claim now. Because so many people are happy making quilts and singing songs that never existed during the slavery era, no one is learning about the realities of slavery nor the movement for freedom. Frankly those myths belittle the courage, endurance, and determination of all our ancestors who struggled and fought for freedom, and who served to make this a more free nation. Quilt making and other textile work is a fantastic domestic and cultural art form, passed down through generations of women, mostly, from around the world to their daughters and communities. This should be celebrated. Classes and workshops on doing UGRR research will help us all uncover many missing pieces of this story, makign quilt squares gets us nowhere closer to that story.
