The strange part, I thought, is that the boy (who was 16) was from Massachusetts and was listed on the regular census as living with the Minkler's. Because his last name is recorded as "Minkler", I don't think I can even look him up in any registry of free Blacks (since his last name was likely NOT Minkler). It may remain a mystery....
