Re: Underground Railroad Meeting ............
In Response To: Re: Underground Railroad Meeting ............ ()
The Bound for Glory presentation is to be commended for its emphasis on the "other" (non-northern bound) Underground Railroad routes. I believe there is much value in expanding our understanding of the broad range of actions taken by freedom seekers in escaping bondage. I believe, however, you have mistaken the Henry "Box" Brown incident with perhaps another similar incident, of which I am unaware. Brown had himself shipped in a box from Richmond to Philadelphia in 1849. His route was a somewhat zig-zagged journey of about 350 miles, travelling from Richmond to Washington by steam boat, then to Baltimore and finally arriving at Philadelphia. He came nowhere near Memphis, and was undiscovered for the entire extent of his journey. I was taken aback by your last comments in the reply of November 17, about the women you encountered at the event. Those comments were entirely inappropriate and merely take all attention away from your other points.
