In Response To: Re: Ancestors of Harriet TubmanURGENT! ()
Several historians, including myself and Catherine Clinton, have raised questions about a young girl named Margaret Stewart who Tubman supposedly kidnapped away from her family and brought north to live with the Seward family in Auburn. Some relatives understood that Margaret was the daughter of one of Tubman's brothers who was free. Tubman had no brothers who were free, so the mystery of who Margaret was remains. Margaret was treated with special kindnesses and was raised in an well-to-do family, which also sparked some jealousy among other Tubman relatives. Duing their lifetimes and after, people have speculated that Margaret may have been Tubman's daughter - a daughter never formally recognized. Long story and very complicated. We will never know. Tubman did adopt a baby girl with her husband Nelson Davis in 1874. They raised her as their own and called her Gertie. We do not know what happened to Gertie either.
