Re: Weeksville--An Pre-Civil War African American
In Response To: Weeksville--An Pre-Civil War African American Comm ()
Hello Judith: I am very familiar with Weeksville through board member Pauline Barfield Public Relations. Weeksville's supporters should be commended for their incredible dedication to the memory of one of New York City's early African-American communities. I am not sure how to respond to your question. "intentional communities." Are you saying that Weeksville's pioneers "intentionally" created "an all black community" or that it evolved into one? ...Are you are looking for examples of communities that mirror it? If it is the latter, then there are probably communities throughout the US that might qualify. Perhaps you could expand a bit. I am certain that many of the Afrigeneas contributors would be pleased to help you in your search. They will cite some all black communities but I am not sure if they will fit all of your criteria. I am sure that Pauline will be delighted that you reached out to Afrigeneas! Let us know how we can be of help. K Wyer Lane
