Re: People who ran with Tubman
In Response To: Re: People who ran with Tubman ()
Jane Kane was a young woman enslaved by Horatio Jones of the Madison/Woolford/Church Creek area of Dorchester County. Jones owned land in these areas, but I believe the home plantaion where Jane lived and would have run away from is south of Madison along the Blackwater River. HIs farm was east of Anthony Thompson's farm. Thompson owned Ben Ross, Tubman's father. Thompson and his sons played a veyr important and prominent part in Tubman's life and the lives of her brothers and sisters. Jane Kane and Ben Ross Jr., probably met while he either labored for the Thompson's at their plantation south of MAdison and WOolford near the Blackwater River, or he met Jane while visiting his father and other family members at the Thompson plantation. The story of Jane's escape is quite detailed in My book, Bound for the Promised Land, and also in Sarah Bradford's bio of Tubman, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman. Bradford has a few details wrong and names mixed up, though. Also, Jane testified to Benjamin Drew during the summer of 1855 in Canada about her treatment by Horatio Jones and her escape with Ben. She escaped with Ben on CHristmas Day 1854, in the company of Tubman and others. When they arrived in Canada, Jane changed her name to Catherine, then married Ben, who changed his name to James Stewart. They lived in Canada and had several children. He died around 1863. Catherine moved to Auburn, NY to be with Tubman and other family members. SOme of her children died, but others survived and theri descendants live in New York and Massachusetts. I do not have acces to my files right now, but if you email me again in a couple weeks I can try to dig through them and see what I cna discover about Jane's Maryland family - some of whom were also owned by Jones as far as I can tell. Best,
