Re: Underground Railroad is American History
In Response To: Underground Railroad is American History ()
I, to, noticed that there are NO underground railroad sites mentioned in central West Virginia. I grew up about 20 miles west of Clarksburg, WV. My grandparents told stories of the underground railroad in Clarksburg. In the city itself you can find info about the caves and abandoned mines around Clarksburg where escaped slaves were hiden and later helped on their way. Clarksburg, West Virginia, should and must be added to the list available from the NPS. My interest in escaping slave stories and the story of the gentleman named John Brown, led me to winning the Golden Horseshoe contest in 1954 from Sherwood Grade School in Doddridge County.
