Re: Underground Railroad and more

The (Greene) County Home Cemetery, Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania:
I am happy to report there was a Rededication of the Greene County Home Cemetery not long ago. About 2 years in the making but now there are some 200 white crosses making as many graves on the hill above the Greene County Jail. One Civil War Veteran and his son; and several African Americans are among those buried there, some are members of my family tree. After the ceremony, I re-checked the area and discovered another possible 200 or so grave sites. The County Home(s) date from approximately 1862 to 1964 so there could be a great many people interred there. I was told crosses would be made for these graves too. If you are ever north bound on I-79 coming to the Waynesburg, Pennsylvania exit, quicky look to the right before the exit and you might be able to see the crosses in the cemetery.
Bad news to report also. The Old Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, PA (very near the location of the Thomas Hughes House) has been reportedly turned into a parking lot! While there are only a few marked graves visible and the cemetery was roped in, records indicate this was a much larger cemetery at one time. Also reported was that slaves were buried there although no written records have been found to verify this. The newspapers were notified and now the wait is on to see what happens. The cemetery was not in the way...it was a small cemetery and there are names that go with some stones! And if slaves ARE buried there, even worse bad news for the African American community.
One cemetery rededicated...and one cemetery (more or less) destroyed.
reporting from Greene County, Pennsylvania...Bill Davison
