The Queens Historical Society has been research on the UGRR on Long Island for a number of years. One of the families that we have been interested in is the Africanus family. They settled in Flushing in the early 1880s. Two of the sons were Selah and Edward. Selah taught at the African American school in Flushing for a while and Edward was the minister of the Macedonia AME Church in Flushing. Both were active in the anti-slavery movement and the struggle for free Blacks to be given the right to vote in New York State. Looking for any additional information on the Africanus family.
