JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION, PHILADELPHIA, JUNE 18, 2005

The Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum of Philadelphia is having a Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 18, 2005, 12:30 to 3:00 pm, with living history portrayals of Harriet Tubman by Millicent Sparks and of William Still by Marvin Jefferson; a discussion and book signing with Fergus M. Bordewich, author of Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America; and musical selections by Sharon Gary Dixon. The Museum is located on 1805 Pine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Admission to the Civil War Museum is $5.00 for adults.

The Kennett Underground Railroad Center has resumed summer hours and tours, 1:00 3:00 pm on Saturdays. Susan Hardy Aiken, "An Incident in the Life of a Slaveholder: The Search for Nancy Gindrat," New England Quarterly 78 (March 2005): 77-100, documents the escape of Gindrat from her owner, James Eppinger of Savannah, Georgia, while Eppinger was visiting his wife's family in Rhode Island in 1829, and the unsuccessful attempts to re-enslave Gindrat, 1829-1833.
