Dear Friends of Freedom:
Omar Chapel, an official Ohio Underground Railroad Historic Site located near Attica in Seneca County, is in urgent need of additional funds to pay for the already completed project of placing a new foundation under the chapel. We received a bequest of $37,000 from an estate, which we thought would be sufficient. We encountered unanticipated cost overruns, plus we were swindled out of $5000 by an unscrupulous contractor. Thus, we are in need of $10,000 - $15,000 to pay for the project, which has already been completed.
Omar Chapel is the site of the Seneca County plaque on the River-to-Lake Trail of the Ohio UGRR and is featured (with very incomplete information) on page 76 of Freedom Seekers: Ohio and the Underground Railroad. Please see the attached letter - http://www.bjmjr.com/ugrr/omar_chapel.htm -. You may view our webgroup at http://groups.msn.omarchapel.
We have written letters to all previous donors, who are all senior citizens on fixed incomes. We will place an appeal in local papers. The task is going to be difficult since the chapel is unknown outside the area. We would welcome any suggestions of possible sources of funding or means of publicizing our need to a wider audience. Thank you in advance for your help.
