S. Indiana Agents / Geo. Evans
I'm collecting information on black conductors and agents active in the UGRR in S. Indiana. Right now I'm focusing on Madison, Ind. an old river town.
George Evans was perhaps the earliest identifed conductor or agent in the area. He lived in the free black community known as Graysville (near Hanover and Madison). Please contact me or post here if you have biographical or URR information on George Evans.
I'm also interested in connecting with other researchers working in the region of S. Indiana or NW Kentucky.
Evans was mentioned by the English traveler E.S. Abdy in his "Journal of a Residence and Tour in the U.S. of N America". Evans contacted URR folks in Jeffersonville in 1830 and offered his home as a safe house.
