Re: PBS and a Children's Lesson Plan?
In Response To: PBS and a Children's Lesson Plan?
() I suggest that all of us who are concerned about the use of the quilt code theory in the teaching of slavery and the struggle for freedom contact the authors of the website (they have a contact source) and tell them your views. This has become insidious, and the time has come that we should branch out from this forum and voice our concerns to a larger audience. Historical facts and analyses support the rejection of the quilt code theory, and the folks at PBS and their associates should be made aware of it. There are many ways to teach children about slavery and freedom. Innovative programs like Bennie's are a fantastic example. Frankly, the use of Sweet Clara for older children is insulting and infantalizing to say the least. One more example of keeping the dialogue about slavery toned down, childlike, all dressed up pretty and unoffensive. Very troubling indeed. Let's make our voices heard! Kate
