underground stations
Over the Thanksgiving break, I visited a friend. She lives with her grandmother. The house is huge and very old. It was one of the first churches in jefferson county Kansas. Here's the thing...The dimensions of the house don't add up. We both knew that the underground railroad had stations in Valley Falls and Oskaloosa. Winchester is un between them. Is it possible that this church was a station and was overlooked by historians? The house is 75% original. They put in the kitchen and bathroom. But here is what we have found that is perplexing. The house is two stories with a basement. The upstairs has4 bedrooms a linen closet and a bathroom. The staricase to the attic as well. NExt to the attic is a 4 feet by 4 feet hollow wall area. There is simply nothing there. We don't know whats in it or what its purpose is. Also upstairs is what looks to be a laundry shoot to the basement except for the fact that it is only big enough for a letter or newspaper to slide down...And why would you send it to the cellar? There is a staircase in one of the closets upstairs also. IT was boarded up by the church. In the original blueprints, the dimensions of the house and room sizes are completely different. No remodeling was done to the room sizes. The basement was recently done because the stone walls were bad. The workmen found another room that had been stoned up. The list can go on and on the things about the house and basement....Anyhow, can anyone help me find info on the safe stations in jefferson county kansas? I'd hate for a historical landmark to be lost. Please email me at ladyelysia2000@yahoo.com As I wil probably not be a regular at this site....And I don't do spam so dont worry. Thanx.
