UGRR & AA Family Connections

Hello All,

For starters the URL below has listed by County, within State, the names of over 3,000 UGRR conductors/operators found in the works of Prof. Wilbur H. Siebert. Check your areas of interest for possible connections. Please read the introduction as to how these names were collected for who is included, as well as excluded. Some names have an asterisk (*), this is to indicate that the person was African-American (AA). However, many KNOWN AA's do NOT have the (*) in front of their name. Most of my AA ancestors, of whom I'm exteremly proud, DO NOT have the designated (*).

My ancestors were involved in Ohio, the counties of Champaign, Clark, Hancock and Hardin. Their names are David & Lewis Adams, Tapler(y) Bray, Frank, Joseph and Lewis Reno and Levi Stanup (Stanhope).

Lewis Adams (1785-1864) , my 3rd great-grandfather, his father-in-law, Frank Reno (????-1833)and Frank's sons, Joseph & Lewis, were involved in Champaign County,OH and there is documentation (Siebert Interviews) to verify their involvement as early as 1826.

David Adams, a son of Lewis Adams, was involved in Hancock County, OH and his efforts have been noted by the Ohio State Bicentennial Commission with a free standing marker in downtown Findlay, OH on the location where his barbershop stood, a safe-house used to harbor fugitive slaves.

Tapley Bray, who married a grandaughter(Susan Adams), of Lewis Adams is recorded as having done his work in Hardin County, OH.

Levi Stanup (Stanhope), a brother-in-law to the Adams and Reno families was located in the area of Clark County, OH. Levi's father, Richard Stanup (Stanhope), who lived to be a reputed 124 years of age and fathered 32 children with 3 wives was a 'personal' valet to George Washington.

The locations for the activity of these men are all on what is now US RTE 68 in Ohio and go from Clark county (south) to Hancock county (north). By 1860 Frank Reno has children (male) living in Medina, OH (northeast), Saginaw, MI and Iowa City, IA. NONE of these men are documented as having been involved in the UGRR for these areas. It is very difficult for me to believe that they WERE NOT involved due to the 'heavy' activity of father, uncle and brother's-in-law.

A personal project of mine is to research these areas of 'non-recorded activity' to determine possible oversights, as well as, to assist in the documentation of UGRR activity in these locations. Any and all help in this effort will be greatly appreciated .

Thanks for listening to my plea,

Art Thomas
