In Response To: Don't be discouraged--keep on looking
() Thanks again for information and encouragement. I spoke to PA archivist who was very helpful when I inquired about Civil War recruitment bounty payments. He says that records probably exist, but could be scattered, since different incentives were offered in various localities at any given time during the war. He suggested looking in historical records of the county in which the soldier was recruited. He also suggested using Civil War records in the National Archives, particularly files of the Provost Marshall whose job was filling the local quota for recruits/draftees. I'm making a list of places I need to visit when I take my research project on the road.
