Underground Railroad Research Forum

Re: More Independent Research
In Response To: More Independent Research ()

Hello Anita,

Your call for more independent research is not falling on deaf ears.

As a matter of fact 'independent esearch' is the mainstay and driving force behind many individual and grass route organizations of UGRR researchers. Your example of the plight of your ancestors and the reporting. or non-reporting, of their involvement isn't as unknown and isolated as you may believe. Rather, it is one of those many activities and set(s) of circumstances being brought to the attention of the NPS-UGRR-NTF.
Thank you for bring it to the attention of this Forum.

A follow-on example......I doubt many people, UGRR researchers included, are aware of the Addison White-Slave Rescue Incident. Click on the below URL for an accounting of that incident. Incidently, this event was Nationwide news when it happened, but it has somehow faded with the passage of time.

An example of the vastness of the UGRR story is found in the list below. Udney Hyde from the AD White story above, seen listed below was simply a player in the UGRR activites in Champaign County, Ohio. His story is but one of the many to found in that county. This is a list of KNOWN, DOCUMENTED men determined to be UGRR Operators/Conductors by William H. Siebert, a foremost leader in the field of UGRR research. A complete listing of Conductors/Operators by State may be found at the URL below.

On a personal note, those with an asterisk (*) in front of their name are designated as African-American. Yet my ancestors, Adams, Lewis, his father-in-law Reno, Frank, Frank's sons Reno, Joseph & Lewis have no such asterisk. All documentation on Lewis Adams from his Freedom Papers (Shelby Co., KY 1813), the Reno's in Census Records from 1820, along with their marriage records all indicate e them as being persons of color. This designation is LOST in Siebert's work. Independant research corrects this 'oversight'.

Yes, more independent research is needed, the question is where, how and by whom is this research recorded. Along with local repostitories, another of the many places, I believe, COULD be through the NPS-UGRR-NTFP. The key being NTFP....NETWORK To Freedom Program, Network being th operative word.

Warmest Regards,

Art Thomas
