"The “underground” was very secret in its workings. The town of Chatham would go to sleep at night and in the morning waken to find new faces among the colored colony. Mr. Ball’s brother Harry was for a time in charge of a “station” at Syracuse. Often in the small hours of the morning the Ball family would be awakened by a knocking at the door. Fresh arrivals told to call there when they reached Chatham.
Harriet Tubman was one of the remarkable figures of the time. Mr. and Mrs. Ball both remember her well. She worshipped in the same church as they did. A middle-aged woman. “If she sat down in the chair there she would fall asleep, declared Mrs. Ball. She was always sleeping”. “At least she seemed to be sleeping”, corrected Mr. Ball."
