Tubman book, research, community, tourism

Please take a look at this article from today's (February 15, 2004) Baltimore Sun. A reporter caught one of my book talks on the Eastern Shore last weekend. As a side note, I had a wonderful weekend lecturing and signing copies of my book Bound For the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, Portrait of an American Hero. Not only was I approached by the young man mentioned in the article who is searching for his possible ancestral connection to Tubman, but I was also approached by a descendant of a slaveholder from the Bucktown area, who copied documents from his own research into his own family's past that included lists of enslaved people who would have known Tubman. In fact, this man I believe is descended from the slave master, Thomas Barnett, whose overseer nearly killed Tubman when he threw an iron weight at her head at the Bucktown Village Store nearly 170 years ago. I hope to trace the last names of some of the slaves listed in the documents he gave me and I will post them on the appropriate forums. It never ceases to amaze me - information can pop up anytime and in the most unexpected ways!
