Sully Site Part of Network Of Underground Railroad
An interesting article from the Washington Post: Sully Site Part of Network Of Underground Railroad The National Park Service has named the Sully Historic Site in Chantilly as a member of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Sully, built in 1794, is listed as a Virginia landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. The Underground Railroad Network includes sites, facilities and programs that help tell the story of resistance against slavery through escape and flight. The Park Service found that Sully, through its display of letters and newspaper advertisements of runaway slaves, makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the Underground Railroad and its role in American history. The national program also coordinates preservation and education efforts nationwide. The house, grounds and representative slave quarters at Sully are owned and operated by the county Park Authority. House tours are offered every day except Tuesdays. Education programs, craft demonstrations and living history events are offered throughout the year.
