() The first thing you need to do is find out who lived in the house at the time when the house may have been part of the Underground Railroad. Or the even more basic question of whether the house was built at the time of the Underground Railroad. I've had conversations with people about a house claimed to be an Underground Railroad station only to found out the house wasn't built until the 1880s. Once you have names of the people who lived in the house, then see if they can be connected in some way to the Underground Railroad. Were they known to have been anti-slavery? Were they connected with some religious group that had the reputation of being anti-slavery? Were they people of African descent? One you know the names, look for obitutaries. Also look in the areas that may have been along the routes. Whiteford, Harford County, Maryland, is just south of York County, Pennsylvania, and not far from the Susquehanna River. An account of the Underground Railroad in York County, Pennsylvania, may include useful information on how people got to York County. Good luck with your research. Chris Densmore
