The Gammon Family --FPOC's & UGRR ACTIVISTS

George Gammon and his wife, Sarah "Sallie" Bradley Gammon, both born as FPOC's in Ohio during the first decade of the 19th century were early UGRR activists and used their home as a safehouse for fugitive Negro slaves.

Supporting pieces of evidence for their activity (documentation) may be found in " History of the Underground Railroad, American Mysteries and Daughters of Jerusalem", Thomas W. Burton, M.D., Springfield, Ohio 1925,---the Papers of Daniel S. Morrow, Sec'y & Treas'r (ca 1876) of the Springfield Underground Railroad Association. Evidence may be found in various other publications, governmental records and newspaper articles from the late 1800's to the early 1900's.

The Gammon Family, staunch A.M.E., his father being a charter member of St. Paul A.M.E., Urbana, Ohio (1824). George and Sarah also lost a son, Charles S. Gammon in the battle at James Island, SC during the Civil War, he (Charles) was a member of the 54th Mass., USCT's of "Glory" fame.

Mrs. Sarah Gammon, died at 10 o'clock last night at her home, 104 Winter. she is the mother of Mrs. Sadie Banks, the cateress. She leaves a husband and three daughters. Funeral at North Street A.M.E. church Friday at 2:p.m.

George Gammon, Well Known Figure Dies at Infirmary Yesterday.

George Gammon, a pioneer resident of this city and a well know figure about town until two years ago, when he was admitted to the county infirmary, died yesterday afternoon at that institution at the unusual age of over 100 years.

The deceased man was born at the Indian reservation where Sandusky now is, he was an underground railroad conductor and at the time of his death was the oldest conductor in the state. He came to Springfield at the age of 18 years and has lived in this city ever since that time. He is survived by three daughters and seven grandchildren. The daughters are Mrs. Margaret Bowser, Mrs. Cornelia Henderson and Miss Sadie Banks, all of this city.

The funeral will be held Monday at 3 p.m. from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bowser, 104 Winter street. burial will be at Ferncliff cemetery.

****The Gammon House is one of the few remaining safehouses, known to be owned and operated by an AA family in the state of Ohio. It is currently undergoing a restorative process.
