Re: UGRR Quilt Code website - new edition, now available in

Hi Leigh:

Thanks so much for the update from historians about the mythical QUILT/UNGRR story.

As you may know my biggest concern is for the accurate teaching of history to our youth. Although I left the teaching profession many years ago, I'm still very much involved in children's advocacy.

The link below highlights the importance of teaching accurate African American history.

I do have a question and comment regarding quilts used during the Holocaust in Europe. My question is that I didn't find the quote on the referenced website. Can you point me to it?

My comment about the European Holocaust is a bit more detailed. I've been interested in the Holocaust because two of my parents' friends were African Americans who spent the war years in Germany and France. One was betrayed to the Nazis and suffered under their cruel racist tyranny in two camps. You'll find on various pages of Afrigeneas the documented story of Africans and people of African descent in Germany and occupied Europe and African American soldiers who were tortured, sterilized, killed under the Nazis and incarcerated in the infamous camps.

Anyone who knows this horrible history should understand that historians of Jewish history are extremely scrupulous about what is written about the Holocaust. They know from experience that mis-information about the tragedy of the Holocaust encourages Holocaust deniers.

The same truth holds for African American history. The Holocaust is sacred...as is African American history.

So to blithely add the quilt codes to the European Holocaust without any credible documentation is incredibly naive.

Again, thank you for the update.

Best regards,

K Wyer Lane
