Re: HINSON VILLAGE IN CHESTER COUNTY PA
In Response To: Re: HINSON VILLAGE IN CHESTER COUNTY PA ()
The Hensons (Hinsons) came from Charles County Maryland, where they were Free Blacks. They are related to Matthew Henson, who discovered the North Pole with Perry. The community of Hinsonville was started in 1830, when Emory Henson, purchased land in Chester County. The community contained a church, and most of the residents were farmers. Henson wanted a self-sustaining community, and for many years his dream was realized. He moved to Canada shortly after the Civil War, and deeded half of his land to Emlen Academy (now Lincoln University).
You would think that Lincoln University would play this aspect of how they got started up. However, when I look at the history of Lincoln, nothing in it mentions Emory Henson. Next to Lincoln University is a church called Hoseana Meeting House, which was an Underground Railroad stop. It is unkempt, as is the graveyard with names such as Henson, Hilton, and Davis. Lincoln University was started by the Presybeterian Church, and my Chester, and Lancaster County ancestors belonged to that church. Lincoln University was supposed to train blacks males as leaders in Africa. After the Civil War white leaders wanted to send blacks to Africa. When that did work, the University began the training of Christian African leaders.
