Forensic Genealogy: Dating Photographs
forensic genealogy makes for an interesting read
Following up on the Man on the Dead Horse stories, Colleen Fitzpatrick (the rocket scientist) has sent the Research Center a copy of her book, "Forensic Genealogy."
It is available at the Research Center for study during business hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
While the whole book is interesting reading, there are several chapters on dating and identifying photographs that are worth reading for anyone with family pictures they know nothing about.
Fitzpatrick cautions people trying to date photographs by clothing styles. She writes: "While clothing styles can serve as a starting point, they can rarely provide the detail that identifies the date of a photograph. Men's clothing styles are relatively more stable than women's, making it difficult to associate a given type of suit with a specific date … . Women's clothing styles change more frequently with major changes usually, but not always, appearing as an accumulation of many smaller ones."
