Re: What Genealogy Software Are You Using?

I use a software called Family Origins 6.0. It was found in a computor store on the clearance rack. At the time I was just getting into using a computor and my daughter helped me to learn about the use. I didn't know about Family Tree Maker. I choose not to change to FTM only because I have so much information already entered on this family software and I am very comfortable with it's prompts.

There is another free on line family organizer called Legacy 6.0. You are limited to some more upgraded options but will be free to purchase the CD or only version CD to download information you need to start organize. I use it for organizing all 'white surnames and family groups' that may be related to my search for my ancestor's. I am very careful about entering any living information about my family on line in this software because identity theft is alive and well.

As far as using computer organizing only, I have to disagree with the dependency. I have had a computer breakdown and lost a lot of picture's and information. Had to repurchase another computer, with the help of family and friends and remake loss data. We have also have had power disasters in my state. Without the paper files I had on hand to recreate and information I had emailed to family in other states, I would not have been able to continue my research. USE BOTH PAPER AND COMPUTERS. Always have a backup plan. Share important copies of documents found with other reliable family members or simply make a CD copy once a year of everything you have and store it in a safe deposit box. I've been there.
