I too am primarly an FTM user. I've used it for many many years and am generally pleased with it and am aware (and sometimes annoyed) by it's limitations. I think FTM is easy to learn to some extent because it doesn't have some of the more sophisticated features. You can of course peruse the FTM forum at genforum.com and get a good idea of all of it's warts. The other program I've tried is the RootsMagic trial version. I am still seriously thinking of buying RootsMagic for some of the side projects I do from time to time for family and friends. I admit that a part of my problem with RM is that I have to think about how to things work and I don't need to think about how the FTM works because I've used FTM for so long. That makes me biased towards FTM because I think I can be more productive in FTM. One the problems I have with RM ( which may not be rational) is that RM creates a lot of little files whereas FTM only has a working and backup file. For some reason my gut tells me that the integrity of all these files could be a problem. It seems like an amatuerish software design and that really bugs me. I am also concerned because a lot of the RM reviews seem to be hyped more than I would expect from an objective review though I admit that at least the about.com reviewer's criticisms of FTM are pretty much on point.
