Actually, there is a freeware program that creates self-extracting zip files as well. I use it myself. It's an excellent program and considering it's free it's an outstanding value. I use it myself, I didn't think of it because I've just never created a self-extracting archive. The program is QuickZip or QuickZip4. You can google for it but my favorite download site is www.tucows.com then search for quick zip. Sorry about the the complex instructions. I think you can easily figure out how to create the self-extracting zip on you own with Quickzip because the program is so user friendly. If I get the chance over the weekend I'll create an archive from one of my pdf files and jot down the steps and post it here.
