Assuming you're refering to printed characters, you can try some OCR (optical character recognition) software. Simple applications are often packaged with the scanners and/or all-in-one printers. The last time I used software like that it was something that was packaged with my all-in-one and it worked pretty good and was pretty intuitive to use. Hope I haven't misunderstood what you were asking.
