Re: New at AOL! Does it impact you?
In Response To: New at AOL! Does it impact you? ()
AOL's announcement of free service is in some respects misleading, in others even insulting.
Those of us who use dial up AOL service because we cannot use or afford hispeed service for various reasons -- like low-pay, un- or underemployment, or a taste for simplicity -- still pay some twenty three dollars monthly (with the AARP discount).
Further, those of us with older computers, which are nevertheless still quite serviceable, are relying on such old AOL as version 6.0 or earlier. Fortunately, it works fine, though it is not fast on a 64 mb PC. But nothing seems fast enough anymore anyway.
So not only are we still paying for slow service while others get fast AOL free, we are being reminded that we are on the lesser side of the digital divide and AOL is doing nothing to bridge that. Meanwhile, AOL somewhat deceptively bruits it is free of cost, as if it were free to everybody.
More, AOL'S choosing to freebie the fast lane while charging the same old hi rates for the slow lane traffic examples the Biblical comment that those that have get more, and from those that have little, even that little will be taken from them.
This is thanks again to the corporate mentality and the commodification of human aspirations and human being.
I've paid for AOL for years, slow as my hook up is. Now that the Lexus lane gets it free, I want it free too.
