The name -a Widow!!!

I don't know if many of you have noticed this, but I have seen a number of women ancestors with marriage status -WIDOW. I could not find any documents showing some of my ancestors were actually married or was in a household with this married surname husband. I personally find it hard to believe so many of them were widows, before a war.Any many of those Minister of the Gospel could not read or write so there was no legitimate paperwork to prove a marriage.

1. I 'supposed' it was a epidemic and he died.
2. I 'supposed' maybe racism and the 'red shirt militia, KKK' any name with this illegal racism law, may have caused this.
3. I supposed after so many years, he may have just walked away and made a new family.
4. And last I supposed the female in question, had a liason with this particular man, they never married, and this is a label they took- widow. Happened in my family.

For some of my ancestors number 4 was the reason. I came up with this one because the men in question showed up in the next census with a new family. My female ancestor was somewhere else with this surname.
Then I had to choose number 3 because this man seemed to marry every 5 years to a different woman in different nearby communities.
But no, number 2 was a great possibility, because after slaves were freed, they had no free labor and, those 'uppity no account -------s', thought they were too good to work for these x-plantation owners. Why they had a nerve to want to own land--'our land', that we can't afford to keep.
Epidemics did happen, children and whole familes died.

Well what I do know, that name widow was a generic term. So don't depend to heavily on it. The husbands may have died. Men moving from 'bed to bed, happened in my family research. That's the reason so many of these cousins are so wide spread, living all over the states, but somebody always remembers that past. We must strive to learn who is family.
